Uniquely Minnesota Artful Distractions—Homeowner Version: Little Gnome Facts in Forest Lake

gnome

Or should I say it is a fact that a little gnome is yard art in Forest Lake, Minnesota. This amazing tree carving and Uniquely Minnesota Artful Distraction makes its home just off of Broadway, the main street of Forest Lake commerce. As a Realtor who works in the Ham Lake and Forest Lake area, I often see decorations in the landscaping while driving through neighborhoods. I discovered this little guy one day when I was driving a different route to pick up my son from one of his friend's homes. Now, I take my family by it often, as we love its whimsy.  He is pretty good sized too; including the mushrooms; the sculpture is about 5 feet tall.

As a lover of fantasy literature, "Gnomes" was one of the first tabletop art books I ever purchased as a college student and I still own it today. I never understood why others think of Garden Gnomes as creepy unless it is like the people with the unnatural fear of clowns. Love ‘em or hate ‘em this gnome is a pretty unique piece of landscape art.

Teri - I love this little guy!!  I would probably be doing the same thing...taking the long way home to drive by Mr. Gnome!!  I love him/them on the Travelocity commercials.

Teri, I have totally enjoyed your yard art, but this one is my favorite so far.  I would love to have that gnome sitting in my front yard!

Teri,

I guess these must be a MN thing, we don't see many on these guys in the west.

Teri, the only gnomes I've seen are on the TV commercial and the horror movies.  :)  We have lots of deer around here, so there are deer lawn sculptures (still not many), and lots of lighted deer lawn ornaments at Christmas time.  Very pretty.  Thanks for giving us a peek at what's common there.

Susie--I forgot about those commercials featuring the travel gnome. Kind of looks like him but much larger!

Lynda--Not too many in MN either...We have lots of chainsaw art bears but this guy is pretty unique and has a very creative owner!

Yolanda--We have the deer statues too and the lighted ones are very pretty. This art is pretty uncommon in MN too...especially in this size. It amazes me at what others have done to jazz up their landscape. Often these are trees that have died and they have transformed the tree trunk into a work of art that will stay with the home. I will periodically post other treasures as I discover them. Hope you enjoy them! Thanks for your comments!

Teri, This is a cute and unique little guy. I wonder how often they have to repaint him considering your weather and all.
Posted by Camarillo CA Real Estate Agent/ Mana Tulberg (805 County Real Estate) over 2 years ago
Mana--There appeared to be several coatings of protectant on the gnome (as most of these do have). I haven't seen him in the winter but I would guess that the might cover him but some poople just leave so they are weathered. I will have to check out in a few months...Hopefully many but then again, the snowplow guy called today to set up our contract so it is coming. :( or :) if you are a kid wanting to go skiing.

Teri~ one of my favoritew Goosebumps books that I read with my kids was about the garden gnomes that came to life and wrreaked havoc.  Good, creepy fun those books are!

Lisa--My kids had quite the collecton of Goosebump books and the Lawn gnome on was a favorite. Monster Blood (1, 2  and 3) along with some Blob story also come to mind as ones we read over and over. Fun to read books that is for certain. This guy looks a little to serene to be frightening! :)

this lawn gnome looks like a great person to have in the garden.  I bet the music he plays helps the grass and the plants grow.

Teri, I love the gnome!  One of the groups that I am involved with has a gnome that we take around the country with us - ok, we "borrowed him" from a rival of ours - and we take pictures of him in various locations and situations and send them to the person he was "borrowed" from.  It's fun and all parties involved look forward to what happens next.  Hmmm...come to think of it - an online group that I participate in has a sock monkey that they send around to the members of the online community - the members of the group do the same thing with the sock monkey and at the end of the year, the person who sent the monkey on the best adventure wins some type of prize (community contributes to the prize).  I wonder if the Active Rainers would be interested in something like that? Could be fun!

Kelly--On one vacation a few years back, we had to take "Baby" with us. Baby was a little plastic baby doll that would go on vacations with people from my husband's office. We were the only ones to put some clothes on the doll before the pics. Baby's owner moved to a new company so she doesn't go with us anymore. Adds a new dimension to vacationing....I would hate to haul this 5 foot chunk of wood around to get a photo...besides I think he is still attached by tree roots. :)
